There are three main supermarket chains in CC Philly. The popular pseudo-health-food store is Whole Foods, formerly Fresh Fields, is a big national chain. Trailing behind is Super Fresh, then Rite Food, and one Trader Joes. Out in the ‘burbs there is a god-awful establishment called Genuardi’s. The reason this place sucks like a vacuum is, it has followed the corporate trend of discount cards. The prices on the shelfes look reasonable…until you reach the watch the cashregister display. They will offer you an application to fill out detailing your demographic information for their computer, and then they sell your info to anyone and track your buying habits and stuff your mailbox with coupons, adertisiments and other direct marketing junk mail. CVS ‘drug’ store plays this game as well. They advertise reasonable prices on the shelf. Get it to the cash register and it is a different story. 7-11 does not reign in Southeastern Pennsylvania. The Wawa is king. It
began as a dairy outside the city in a place called Wawa, PA, near Chadd’s
Ford, PA, just above the Delaware state border. Now it is just like every
convenience store you have ever been to. Only they have this inane system
of ordering delicatessen sandwiches. I tried it and it did not work for
me. I wont be back soon. There are a multitude of family-owned bodegas
throughout the city to chose from. |
