| THE GREEN LINE - Subway-Surface | ||
| THE GREEN LINE TROLLEYS are referred to as Subway-surface lines and are subterranean in Center City emerging west of the Schuylkill in University City. They radiate out from a single point. [See SEPTA.] Unfortunately the free maps of the subway fall short on this point. They do not indicate where the trolleys go by giving a cross street. [see detail] Don't expect the operator to tell you, either, even though they are supposed to call out the station names. Detailed maps are no longer available from SEPTA. Some colleges offer decent maps to students. The posters on the platforms of Green line stops are nearly useless. SEPTA recently up-dated it's website. Now it has a map with cross-streets indicated. | ||
If you transfer to the Green Line, there is green paint on railings etc
to indicate you are on the correct platform. The trolley itself is white.
It may stop twice in a station: once to let passengers off, then a few
yards closer to pick them up. At a transfer station you may get on via
the rear or front doors. If you are not coming from the subway or have
not paid your fare at a turnstile, enter the front of the car as you would
on a bus. The trolley only stops if there are passengers on the platform
or someone trips the wire. Otherwise, the operator passes through stations.
To exit via the rear doors, you have to step down into the step well.
Otherwise the doors wont open and the trolley will continue on. The ominous flashing blue light. No, it is not a K-mart special... |
