THE BROAD STREET LINE

or orange line, does not span the entire length of the city. The stations are not as clean or decorated as the Market-Frankford line which is more likely to be used by tourists. There are 22 stops on the Broad Street line as opposed to the 28 of the M-F. The trains are not equipped with the automated conductor system which both displays and announces stops. The stations have a more uniform look than the M-F line. Each has its own color glossy tile. The Local or normal, Special (sports or other events), Express, and Ridge Avenue Line and all run on the same track. They are indicated by the color of the head lights:

THE RIDGE AVENUE SPUR

is a short diagonal line that runs along Ridge Avenue — a northwest-southeast street. It is Orange like the Broad Street line. It joins 8th Street Station on Market Street of the M-F line with Girard Station on Girard Avenue on the Broad Street line. There are only two stops along that diagonal: Fairmount, between Broad & 13th Street, and Chinatown, on Ridge and 8th Street - which is between Race and Vine. The Fairmount Sta. on the Broad Street line at Broad & Fairmount is not connected to the Fairmount Sta. on the Ridge Line.
Though the Ridge line runs up north to the last stop on the Broad Street line, Fern Rock Transportation Center. North of Girard Sta. the Ridge line is like an express with three stops between Girard and Fern Rock as opposed to nine Local. The actual express has two in between. If you are attempting to take it from Girard, expect to see no signage whatsoever indicating the platform or line. Girard avenue may not the place you want to ask people questions. It does not run on Sunday.
