Exceptions to the rules within Center City

Benjamin Franklin Parkway is akin to Broadway in NYC, in that it cuts across part of Center City diagonally. It runs from J.F.K. Plaza, adjacent to City Hall, northwest up to Eakin’s Oval in front of the PMA (Philadelphia Museum of Art) near the Schuylkill River.

Ridge Avenue runs nearly parallel to Benjamin Franklin Parkway, from the heart of Chinatown at Race Street, up across Fairmount Street and North Broad Street, crossing Fairmount Park around 34th, and meandering outside of Northeast Philly to become Ridge Pike. Traffic flow is bidirectional.

Passyunk Avenue (pashy-unk) is one of two diagonal radicals of the southern conference of Philly outside of Center City. Beginning at South 5th Street, at South Street, southwest to Broad Street, where it changes angle and heads west-southwest across the Schuylkill. There it bends south to the Philadelphia International Airport and becomes Essington Avenue. Traffic is one-way and flows northeast in South Philly.

Gray’s Ferry Avenue is also below Center City and begins at South Street between South 22nd and South 23rd Streets and runs southwest crossing the Schuylkill. Traffic flows one-way in South Philly - southwest.

There is no 1st or 14th Street

1st Street is called Front Street. It is on the Delaware River side of Center City. Delaware Ave, also named Christopher Columbus Boulevard, is east of Front Street and is the major N-S road that flanks the Delaware River on the east side of the city. North of Market Street, the El is sandwiched between the north and southbound lanes of I-95 up from beneath the Ben Franklin Bridge to Girard Avenue.

14th Street would be Broad Street. The order goes: 13th, Juniper, Broad, 15th. Juniper is not considered a major N-S street. It spans Vine Street (N) to Bainbridge (S) but is discontinuous above & below.[click here for map]
